The Falcone Report

March 2024

Ah here we are, hoping for an early spring, but instead getting faked out by Smarch weather. It’s been a combination of unseasonably warm and deathly cold up here in Canada, and I assume it will stay as such for the next month or so. But March is when we find our groove in any given year. We are over the wide-eyed optimism of New Year’s Resolutions, the chill and romance of February has come and gone, and now we can focus on the adventure that will be 2024.

What I’m Writing

So, this month I’ve been doing a lot of push-ups. At first glance this might not sound like it has a lot to do with writing, but it is all part of a little experiment that I’m running as part of working on Do The Thing. I set a physical fitness goal for myself for 2024 that by Dec 31st I want to be able to do 100 push-ups. Since setting this goal I’ve been informed by my very fit friends that 100 is a tad aggressive, but I’m going to let it stand.

Each day I’ve been working on physical exercise of some kind and seeing if it has an impact on my writing productivity. Now, I don’t have a tonne of data yet, but so far it does seem that the days when I have at least 30 mins of moderate physical exercise I am able to write more effectively. I’ll keep you posted as to how the journey all goes.
What I'm Reading

Lowdown Road by Scott Von Doviak

If you are a fan of crime novels, the Dukes of Hazzard, Smokey and Bandit, Evel Knievel, Bruce Lee, Shaft, Cannonball Run, and pretty much every other awesome thing that came out of the 70s than this book is for you. A page-turning tale, Von Doviak takes all these familiar threads and weaves them altogether into something new that hits the accelerator and doesn’t stop until it crosses the state line.

Check it out here.

It’s that time of year again! The glitz! The glamour! The Academy Awards. As is tradition, Andrew and I discuss every film nominated for the best screenplay Oscar.

Give it a listen here.

A big thank you to everyone who came out to our first Life Drawing Session in the Studio. It is always inspiring to see such a great mix of artists working on their craft. If life drawing is something that interests you and are in the Toronto area, check out this link.
Monthly Cocktail

The Devil’s Margarita

  • 1 1/2 ounces Blanco tequila
  • 1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 1/2 ounce red wine
  • Garnish: lime wheel
Add all the ingredients except the wine to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Strain into a martini or coupe glass. Then using the back of a spoon slowly pour the wine and float it on top of the drink. Garnish with a lime wheel et voilà. I like to rim with salt, but you don’t need to.

This cocktail is a very interesting twist on the OG margarita, which of course has so many permutations by now that it’s hard to even remember what the OG is. I made one this year for National Margarita Day and was not disappointed.
I’m always looking for feedback on this newsletter. What kinds of things do you want to hear from me? Let me know here.
