The Falcone Report

January 2024

Happy New Year to all my subscribers! I hope that your NYE festivities were everything you hoped for. I got to ring in the New Year with a couple dear friends and it was a great start to what I expect will be a banger year.

What I’m Writing

December is traditionally the least productive of any month for me, and 2023 was no different! I did get some words down and polished off a chapter that I really think is solid, so I’ll call it a win.

More importantly, I take a look at my plans for the upcoming year and decide what I’m going to write. I am very aggressive with my goals but then refine in June and again in October. This is the year that I put the novel to bed, strike up a Kickstarter for it, and I’m very excited for the things that Marcus To and I have planned for Brotherhood of the Iron Dragon. Stay tuned for more to come.

Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose

A lot of books on writing tend to be very technical. They tell you about what plot point should go where and how to build a character and so on and so forth, but I always love finding a book that talks about writing as art, and Reading Like a Writer takes a microscope to each component part. The chapters are organized by discussing the smallest component part (words) to larger concepts and finally by giving a “books to read immediately” list. This book was a soothing read for me, and a good reminder that reading is writing and writing is reading.

This month, Andrew and I look at the works of the one and only Hayao Miyazaki and his films for Studio Ghibli. Any fan of storytelling and worldbuilding won’t want to miss this one. Hop on the cat bus and give it a listen here.

The RAID Studio

The studio has so many big plans for 2024. I am excited to be able to share them with you but I can’t…. just yet. Your best bet is to also subscribe to the RAID newsletter, which you can do here.
Monthly Cocktail

The Gold Rush
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 3/4 ounce honey syrup
  • Garnish: lemon twist
A simple drink but nice variation on a whiskey sour, add the bourbon, lemon juice, and honey syrup to a shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice and then add a lemon twist.

Honey syrup is made the same way as simple syrup, but with honey instead of sugar. It uses the same 1:1 ratio although some like to use two parts honey for each part of water. I’ve never tried it that way as that is a lot of honey.
I’m always looking for feedback on this newsletter. What kinds of things do you want to hear from me? Let me know here.
