The Falcone Report

October 2023

October is here. Full of horror movies, pumpkin spice lattes, and sweater weather. But I’m writing this from a hotel room in Las Vegas and its 33 degrees outside so sweater weather is a little further out. I try to visit Vegas once or twice a year. It’s a bit of a Lazarus Pit for me: a place where I can recharge the batteries and get back to work.

What I’m Writing

Recently a writer friend reminded me that although I’m good at treating writing as the real work it is, that doesn’t mean that I should forget that it’s a creative endeavour. Doing the Thing is all well and good but there also needs to be time to re-cultivate creative inspiration. So, I put the pen down on a couple of things that had been stagnant and nagging me and pivoted to ignite those creative fires.

As Spooky Season is upon us and I’m getting ready to re-watch my favourite monster movies I’ve cracked the script on a new horror comic idea that I’m pretty stoked about. You can’t always plan when ideas come you, but I might as well ride the wave while I’m right in the middle of zombie flicks, candy, and Spirit Halloween visits. I have too much on the go to fully develop the script now, but I wanted to get enough of it on paper so when I crack open the notebook again it isn’t just chicken scratch nonsense.
What I'm Reading
An image of...
Night Fever by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

Writers love writing stories about writers. We honestly can’t help it. Stick with what you know I guess. The latest story from the powerhouse team of Brubaker and Phillips is a neat little tale about a writer than becomes embroiled in a life of crime after accidently taking over the identity of a criminal. Along the way his action shifts him from mild-mannered editor to stone-cold killer. I don’t know if readers will find it packs the same punch as some of their previous works, but fans of the genre will enjoy it and should pick it up.

This month Andrew and I boldly go where no man has gone before and talk about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds! We also touch upon Lower Decks, and discuss which Trek is the best. (Spoiler: it’s DS9).

The RAID Studio

Finally, after months of cons, Kickstarters, and burning the candle at both ends the studio is slowing down a bit….to open a café. The previous operators of the café in the front of the studio space have moved on to other pastures and the operation of coffee, empanadas, pizza, and cookies has fallen to Rob and Ramon! If you happen to find yourself in Parkdale in Toronto stop on by and try out the new menu!

Monthly Cocktail

American Gothic

A spiced Old Fashioned with Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Ancho Chile Liqueur, Amaro Meletti, and Ancho Chai Masala Tea Syrup.

The drink is sweet, spicy, strong, and I would imagine can console even the most despondent of gamblers.
Las Vegas has no end to great cocktail bars, but one of my favourites is the Chandelier Bar at the Cosmopolitan. Multiple floors winding through an enormous chandelier, it is the place to grab a beverage before or after a show or dinner. This was the cocktail I had.
I’m always looking for feedback on this newsletter. What kinds of things do you want to hear from me? Let me know here.
