The Falcone Report
Hello readers, sorry to have missed last month’s newsletter, but some life stuff came up and I had to miss sending you this brief update on my musings. We are in May, which means the gauntlet of work and life that sets me with a very full schedule from now until early September. It’s all fun stuff: deadlines, vacations, comic conventions, and Kickstarter preparation, but my day planner is set to explode.

I am very happy to report that I’m now heading into the home stretch on The Great Comic Caper. It is sometimes hard to know, or see, how close you are to finishing a novel, but I use a bit of a writing hack to keep myself motivated. I have all my remaining scenes written in sharpie on index cards and I keep the stack next to my laptop as I write. Once I’m done with a scene I tear up the index card and toss it into recycling. This way I can see the pile getting smaller and I get closer and closer to finish line.

Slow Productivity by Cal Newport
|
We tend to want results immediately these days, whether it is for fitness or diet or even creativity. But some projects need time and energy devoted to them in a way that runs contrary to the work culture of 2024. Cal Newport ( of Deep Thinking fame) takes a close examination of why we should all be working slower, and what we can do to push back on the rush of the world and try to slow down work.
|
What interested me about this book is that a lot of examples Newport uses are creatives ones (Jane Austen, Lin-Manuel Miranda) and illustrate how applying creative productivity to office jobs has a lot of benefit. Centring on three main principles: do fewer things, work at a natural pace, obsess over quality, this book really is for anyone in a creative or knowledge work job that is struggling with how we work.

We did it! Ten Years! This month Andrew and I celebrate the tenth anniversary of Storybeater with a look back at the pop writing trends of the last decade and ruminate on where we think writing is headed.

The Studio had a great time at our annual creative retreat in April. Lot of good food, fun times, and some amazing creative discussions. We are excited to show you all what we have coming for the rest of 2024 and into 2025!
|
And a huge thank to everyone who came to see us at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. It’s one of our favourite conventions of the year and we always love connecting with fans and other creatives.

3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed

The Corpse Reviver is one of many cocktails designed to give you that Hair o’ the Dog pick me up and the #2 version is the most well-known. Chill a coupe glass and rinse with Absinthe. Shake the remaining ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into the glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
